What Is Included in a Mommy Makeover?

The term "Mommy Makeover" is coined for any surgery, or collection of surgeries, that is designed to help restore your pre-pregnancy physique. Some of the most common procedures seen with a Mommy Makeover include:

  1. Breast augmentation with implants and Breast Lift
  2. Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
  3. Liposuction (fat removal)
  4. Vaginal rejuvenation
  5. Facial rejuvenation and skin tightening

1. Breast augmentation with implants and Breast Lift

Before you visit your plastic surgeon, you may wish to understand a bit more about breast implants, breast lift and breast augmentation in order to have a better conversation with your cosmetic surgeon.

Breast augmentation alone cannot correct sagging or drooping breasts. Simply increasing the volume, or size, of the breast will only cause the breast to sag more with time. When performed as a standalone procedure, breast augmentation can increase or balance the size of the breast, restore the breast volume, and restore the shape of the breast after partial or total loss. In contrast, during a breast lift procedure (mastopexy), loose, excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is tightened. As a result, the overall shape of the breasts is improved, and they are lifted to a new, more upright position. In combination, breast implants and a breast lift result in total rejuvenation, not only increasing the size of the breast, but restoring a firmer, perkier appearance as well.

There is also some confusion on breast fillers vs breast implants around forums and review sites. Please take note that breast fillers (using dermal filler for breast enlargement) have been withdrawn due to numerous controversies.

Tummy Tuck Malaysia
tummy tuck does several things:
  • Removes abdominal skin that is in excess, and resets the tone to the remaining skin
  • Removes some fat from the abdomen
  • Redistributes skin and fat from the upper abdomen to the lower, effectively thinning the abdominal wall skin/fat thickness
  • Tightens the abdominal wall musculature, which both flattens the stomach from the side view as well as pulling in the waist to improve the "hour glass" shape
Very simply, the tummy tuck reverses the changes caused by childbearing, and is typically the appropriate operation for mothers or individuals who have undergone significant weight fluctuation. Liposuction is for fat contouring in individuals who have resistant areas of localised fat and also have good skin tone. If skin tone is bad (lax, or with stretch marks), the results from liposuction may be disappointing.

3. Liposuction (fat removal)

Liposuction is a type of cosmetic surgery that removes fat from the human body in an attempt to change its shape. Other similar or closely related jargons include lipoplasty, smart lipo, fat modeling, liposculpture, suction lipectomy, suction-assisted fat removal, lipo, tummy tuck, abdominoplasty etc.

Liposuction is the fastest way for one to lose stubborn and unwanted fat from the arms, abdomen, back, thighs and buttocks – areas which may not respond quickly enough to traditional weight-loss methods of diet and exercise.

Liposuction techniques including Smart Lipo, Vaser Lipo and Cool Lipo and traditional liposuction (tumescent liposuction) are mainly performed by plastic surgeons (with LCP Chapter 3), in accordance to the Guidelines on Aesthetic Medical Practice for Registered Medical Practitioners.

Tumescent liposuction is the gold standard for surgical fat removal and has a long safety record. While the internet is a wonderful source of information, it can also cause a lot of confusion because so many people are trying to call attention to themselves through innovative marketing techniques and rebranding. Liposuction, liposculpture, Vaser 4d – all of these are variations on tumescent liposuction.

There is little evidence that the newer methods are better than the traditional method. What is clear, however, is that there is a great deal of difference between the results obtained by highly experience liposuction surgeons and those who dabble in this procedure.

You have most likely browsed through various websites and hopefully, have shortlisted a few clinics or centres. However, it’s clear that some of these sites are not aware of the local regulations and theGuidelines on Aesthetic Medical Practice for Registered Medical Practitioners. For tummy tuck procedures in Malaysia, the guidelines define and stipulate who, what and where tummy tuck can be and cannot be done.

There are also too many self proclaimed experts out there, but who's to know? That's why the guidelines above were developed, in order to protect consumers.

4. Vaginal rejuvenation

vaginal rejuvenation

In the past, it referred almost exclusively to cosmetic surgeries and treatments that changed the look and feel of the vagina like vaginoplasty, hymenoplasty and labiaplasty.
These days, vagina rejuvenation has expanded to include real medical issues related to the nether region such as these:
● Helping to reduce incontinence
● Fixing pelvic prolapse (a condition where pelvic floor muscles are weak, causing your organs to literally fall down)
● Improving vaginal pH to prevent recurring infections
● Reducing vaginal dryness and itching
● Alleviating painful intercourse
● Giving confidence to be intimate again
There are quite a number of solutions and therapies on the market for each of these conditions and more.
Some are non-invasive, such as moisturisers or lubricants; there are even natural remedies like Kegel or pelvic floor exercises that are beneficial and recommended even for those who don’t have vaginal issues.
Others require professional supervision, like hormone therapy.
And there are still other vaginal “rejuvenation” methods that are considered controversial, such as plasma injections, cosmetic surgery, and even laser therapy.

5. Facial rejuvenation and skin tightening

Non-surgical options such as a combination of creams and lasers can help stimulate collagen for a more youthful appearance.

Ultrasound skin tightening such as HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) uses focused ultrasound that aims to achieve a non-surgical facelift by stimulating collagen production deep below the skin’s surface, resulting in a clinically significant lift that is visible after two to three months.

Injectables such as Botox and fillers can also help to restore youth to the face, and fat grafting from liposuction fat can also be used to restore volume due to aging. Results from these non-surgical options are not permanent and maintenance sessions would need to be done about once a year.

How much does a mummy makeover cost in Malaysia?

An accurate cost estimation of a mommy makeover depends on the type of procedures and can only be determined after your doctor has assessed your condition during your initial consultation.

As a guide, the following is the estimated cost:

Breast Augmentation - around USD 4,500.

Liposuction - around USD 2,000 per region.

Tummy Tuck - from USD 5,000 (mini tummy tuck) to USD 8,000 (extended tummy tuck).

Vaginal Rejuvenation - the cost for non-surgical methods vary from USD 500/session to USD 1200/session depending on the method and type of machine.

Facial Rejuvenation - around USD 250 /session.

When can you get a mommy makeover?

Typically it is recommended to wait at least six months after giving birth to get a mummy makeover, but for some women, this period might be longer. The key is to give your body enough time to heal and return to normal functioning.

It is recommended to complete your family before having mommy makeover surgeries due to the weight gain and skin stretching from future pregnancies.

Do consider the impact of surgery on your children and family. The best time to schedule your operation is when you and your family feel the most comfortable.

How long is recovery after mommy makeover surgery?

Your recovery from surgery depends on the procedures involved in your mommy makeover.

Plan for at least six weeks to achieve a full recovery after a mummy makeover. You will not be able to exercise for the first six weeks and you should get your plastic surgeon’s approval before you resume your workout routine.
